In the Summer of 2009 I loaded up in the car with art director Sue Redding and my assistant Debra Zeller. We began the 5 hour drive through from San Francisco to Chico to scout locations for the next day’s shoot. Thunderstorms were brewing on the horizon even though it was 90 degrees out. We had no idea what conditions we were going to face the following day.

Later that evening we met up with the rest of the crew from Overland Equipment. It was the clients vision was to use employees in the outdoor industry rather than professional models. They sent down a crew of 4 from Portland to be our talent for the day. The weather worked out in our favor and I got hundreds of great shots in a matter of hours. The images have since been used throughout Overland’s catalogs, brochures, trade show, and marketing materials.

I was commissioned by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine this last spring to drive up to Napa Valley and photograph celebrity chef Michael Chiarello in his home. The assignment was for a regular article the magazine runs where chefs discuss items in their refrigerators, thus the fridge is open in each of these shots. No, that was not an oversight.

Michael Chiarello is best known for his role as a host on the Food Network and Bravo channel’s new “Top Chef Masters”. He is also the owner of Bottega Napa Valley, Tra Vigne, and the NapaStyle Paninoteca & Wine Bar.

This past spring and summer I spent most of my spare time volunteering for the Three- Minute Picture Show, a film festival that encourages anyone, regardless of experience, to dedicate 30 days to creativity. Participants sign up, make a three-minute film, and get to watch the results on the big screen in front of a live audience. The film festival began in 2001 in Oakland and in 2010 expanded to Portland and also added screenings for films made by kids. The results were inspiring as emails poured in from parents whose children received giant self-esteem boosts from seeing their work on the big screen, as well as adult participants who were thankful for the creative fire ignited by the film festival. I was happy to be able to donate my time to this project that is really a labor of love and inspires so many people in my community. I rebuilt the festival’s website, designed festival merchandise (using the adorable illustrations of Leah Brawley) which helps fund the project, and I served as “AV Club President” and projected the films at the screenings. While in the projection booth, I used the opportunity to experiment with some long exposure environmental photos.

Once in awhile I’m a second shooter for Debra, and I love it that way. I’m basically free to roam the wedding and shoot to my hearts content while Deb focuses on client relations and formals. For me wedding photography is an adventure sport.

I’ve neglected this blog for about 8 months now and I’m anxious to get some new posts up. These images of Chris displaying competitive body building poses was taken in my studio earlier this year. Enjoy and I’ll have a post of a recent trip to Guatemala up this week.
